An award-winning architect has transformed an old car workshop into a one-of-a-kind family home – but you’d never know it from outside.
Tacked onto the end of a row of Victorian terraces in the historic conservation area of Paddington, 4.5km east of Sydney CBD, Matt Elkan’s ‘Smash Repair House’ is the perfect balance of heritage charm and modern luxury.
Mr Elkan, who has carried out several restoration projects, preserving the substance of older homes while reworking and adding to them, breathed new life into the mechanic’s workshop by adding a central courtyard that floods natural sunlight into all three floors.
